Information
The Flats Lander guides prefer the overlooked but hard fighting warm-water species over traditional trout fishing. They chase carp using modified saltwater flats techniques and hybrid striped bass (wipers) in the open waters of Kansas reservoirs. But if it is capable of and willing to bite, they will throw at it. They regularly catch channel cat, buffalo, drum, gar, large and smallmouth bass, white bass, crappie, bluegill and everything else that swims in the Sunflower state!
Flats Lander Guide Service, based in St. George, Kan., provides fly fishing guiding and instruction in both fresh and salt water. The Flats Lander Guides are experienced anglers and instructors, with extensive local knowledge of the Midwest and Florida Keys. Capt. Sodie is a Coast Guard and IGFA certified Captain, a FFF Certified Master Casting Instructor and has taught casting and tying to hundreds. A professional educator, Capt. Sodie guides in Kansas in the spring and fall, and spends part of each summer guiding in the Keys.
His partner Craig "Professor" Phillips is a supervisory biologist for the U.S. Army and a part-time freelance writer. His articles on fly fishing for carp and wipers have appeared in "American Angler" (titled "Backyard Flats Training" Fall, '06 and "Three Seasons Wipers" Summer '06). He is a long-time instructor of fly fishing and tying at "Becoming an Outdoors Woman" and "Women in the Outdoors" events in Kansas. Craig guides in Kansas in the spring, summer and fall.
